On the job, you will ...

  • Transport goods from one location to another 
  • Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions 
  • Follow signals from loading crews 
  • Verify instructions and routes 
  • Check vehicles to ensure that mechanical, safety and emergency equipment is in good working order 

Some of the career options you will have ... 

Most Heavy Truck Driving graduates work full time for a trucking company. Truckers drive heavy trucks for delivery and help load and unload trucks. Long-haul truck drivers may be away from home for days or weeks at a time. 

Students should also consider pursuing Advanced Heavy Truck Driving and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as part of their career pathway. 

The credentials you will earn ... 

In the Heavy Truck Driving training program, you can earn nationally recognized credentials and/or state licensures that show you have the skills and knowledge to work in transportation, logistics and customer service.  

Students should also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of
the program.

What you’ll need to start training ... 

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (can be earned at all Job Corps centers) 
  • Completion of all introductory and career preparation courses 
  • Passing scores on all written and performance tests 
  • Meet academic (math and reading) requirements 
  • Have a valid, state-issued driver’s license (can be earned at all Job Corps centers) 
  • Meet age requirements (varies by state) 
  • Have a physical examination every two years 
  • Read and speak English

Rebecca Little
Rebecca Little has a long history with Wind River Job Corps Center. Rebecca started in the security department and then was promoted to her current position as Heavy Truck Driving instructor. Rebecca says she enjoys the challenges each day brings while working at Wind River Job Corps. Rebecca also enjoys witnessing the excitement of the students learning and reaching their goals.
Calvin Martin
Calvin Martin serves as the Heavy Truck Driving instructor at Wind River Job Corps Center. As a seasoned instructor, Calvin enjoys working with students and finds it rewarding to watch them gain confidence in their abilities as they grow into positive role models and successful citizens.
